WHAT IS PINK SHIRT DAY? The Story Behind It And What YOU Can Do To Help!

Transgender girl Jazmine Khan takes a minute to explain what Pink Shirt Day is and what you can do to help! Pink shirt day is an anti homophobia and anti bullying celebration day across schools in Canada stemming from a very memorable event that occurred in Nova Scotia in September of 2007. On the first day of school in Nova Scotia in 2007, a boy went to school dressed with a pink polo shirt. He got harassed by a few bullies and was called derogatory names such as 'faggot' 'fag' 'homo' and others. He was also threatened to be beat up or killed if he was to return with the same attire or if he was to be wearing pink... A few students witnessed this event and went home that night and started a Facebook event called 'Sea Of Pink' which consisted of people showing up the next day to school wearing pink shirts, and clothing in support of anti bullying and anti homophobia. Much to everyone's surprise, almost the entire school showed up the next day wearing pink. Now every year in Canada schools do this to raise awareness and to show support for those that have ever been bullied. This year in BRITISH COLUMBIA Pink Shirt Day will be held on February 29th 2012.
